Interview with Eric Farber

Eric Farber is the creator of The Parade Ground

What are you most excited about in bringing your work to the FGP Festival?

I'm excited that it is encouraged for me to make something that can be an absolute mess in order to bring to life as full of a vision of this piece as possible in this moment, even if we are dealing with many unpredictable variables (like the weather and an unprepared public). I'm excited to bring live music outside in a mobile parade to the people of New York City who are NOT EXPECTING IT!

Send us an image that describes or represents your artistic process

Who are some of your art heroes?

Charlemagne Palestine, Terry Adkins, Taylor Mac, Xu Bing, Marcel Duchamp, Simon Starling, Patti Smith, Sun Ra, Mark Dion, John Cage

What is a highlight of your process with FGP this past year?

Andrew Neisler turns any room into a candyland ball crawl of wonder. I am regularly awed by how dedicated he is to his craft and to inspiring the rest of us to find as much joy as he does in all of the dumbest stuff.

Oh no, your process is showing! What's your artistic process guilty pleasure? Or what's the thing you do that you don't want to tell us?

I like to take breaks from writing by listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and eat birthday cake when it's not my birthday. My cat Zube is my secret weapon, I often ask her for advice when I get stuck.

What other events in the FGP Festival are you really excited about?

All of the artists in the Playground Playgroup are working on brilliant projects, and it has been a tremendous joy to see each project grow throughout the year. I'm very excited about Wil Petre's A Cocktail Party Game. His project is in many ways the exact opposite of mine, and yet we formed an extraordinary bond this year supporting each other as we both scrambled to figure out what we were making. It's exciting to see the non-traditional choices that Wil made this year that liberated him from the expectations of existing forms. I can't wait to play the game!
